Summer College Checklist

By Nicole Hillstead on May 25, 2012
  1. Find a job
  2. Find an internship
  3. Take some online classes
  4. Find housing
  5. and….vacation?

When you’re in college, or preparing to leave for college, the summer can seem like one large “to-do” list.

Let’s see if we can’t help get that beautiful red line crossed through each item a little bit quicker with these tricks I’ve discovered throughout taking part in the process myself.

Find a Job; three words that a more easily said than done. The average person applies for and is denied numerous jobs before finally being offered a spot. One of the biggest issues is that most companies don’t want to hire just for a few months. So that summer job idea gets thrown out pretty quickly when your interviewer finds out your only in town for the summer. Solution? Look for companies that have seasonal jobs; landscapers, malls, water parks, event coordinators, summer camps, national parks, theme parks, places that will get busier and/or are only open during the summer season.

Internships can be found fairly easily via the all powerful and amazing internet. I recently found a fantastic website that helps you search for internships in whatever area you’d like to work in http://www.internmatch.com/

It’s also helpful if you are able to go in and actually meet with or talk to people that work for the place/company you’re interested in interning for. When they can put a face to a name your application means much more to them.

Online Classes are a great way to sneak in a little bit of education while you’re not living on campus. You can get further ahead in your major while not having to take so many credits that it makes your head want to explode.

While it’s not exactly a picnic in the park Housing is not super hard to find. Housing is one of those things you define as being simple but time consuming. The best way to see what kind of housing is in your area is to check your University’s website; most schools will have a listing of the housing nearby and what kind of amenities it entails. Once you get an idea of what you like…use social media! Social media such, like Facebook, can help you find people that are selling their current contracts and can help you answer questions you might have for a certain place that someone else has already lived in and experienced.

There are many ways to go about each of the things on your summer college checklist but I hope a few of these ideas were ones perhaps you hadn’t thought about yet!

And as for the vacation? Well…I’ll leave that one up to you ;)
